The tattoo shows the Superman shield, with a red outline, a black and yellow S-shaped emblem and a dark red inner edge. Smooth shading and bright highlights give the shield a raised, three-dimensional look. Colour ink dominates the design, set against plain skin with the close crop showing no surrounding context.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boats came in low that winter, and Ailsa Gunn was the only one on Rauva who still kept a lamp lit for them. Her grandmother had painted a shield on the boathouse door, red as a sunset, with a black band cutting across it and a yellow heart curling beneath the band. Nobody on the island could say any more what it meant. They only knew that a boat carrying that mark on its prow would always be turned home.

One night in February a skiff came out of the fog with no lamp and no name. The man at the tiller was shivering so hard that his oars knocked together. Ailsa threw him a rope, and when he climbed onto the stones he pointed at the painted door and asked, in a tongue she did not know, whether this was the place where the shield hung. She understood him anyway. She laid her palm flat against the red edge of the paint and held it there until his hands stopped trembling.

He stayed three days. On the last morning he took a stub of charcoal and drew the shield again on the flagstone, the band bending like a river and the yellow rolling under it. Every line was steady. Ailsa asked him where he had learned to draw it so well. He said his mother had told him it was the only true shape a sea-sign could have, because it was the shape of a held breath.

When the spring tides came he rowed away at dawn. The next autumn a crate arrived on the ferry addressed to the boathouse. Inside was a painted shield the size of a cartwheel, its edges glossed like a fresh cut, and a note in square capitals: FOR THE DOOR THAT KEPT ME. Ailsa hung it over the old one and left the charcoal drawing on the flagstone, where the rain has never quite washed it away.
