Black and grey realism tattoo of a winged syringe wrapped in a snake, with DIABETIC T1 lettering above it, on a forearm.

Winged syringe and snake on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A syringe with a snake coiled around its barrel sits at the centre of the design, with large feathered wings spreading out on either side. The text DIABETIC T1 is set in typewriter-style capitals above the wings. The piece uses detailed black and grey shading for the feathers, scales and metal, and the design fills most of the forearm.

Dear Nell,

The grass snake came back to the press house on Tuesday, the one with the yellow collar, and I found it coiled round the old glass syringe on the shelf where Dad kept the drench gun for the ewes. You'll say I should have shifted it, but it had caught the sun through the slats and looked more settled than I've been all summer. I left it be and went back to the Bramleys.

The orchard is heavy this year. The Discovery branches are propped with forked ash poles, and every second apple on the Cox has a wasp inside it. Mr Pryce from the lane came round with his ladder and offered forty pounds for the lot, which I told him was a cheek, though I did sit on the step afterwards with my tea, thinking about it. Forty pounds would clear the feed bill and the roof above the cider barn.

Something has changed since you left, and I don't know what to call it. The swifts have gone early. The wind has a cold edge at dusk. I walked the rows last night with the torch, counting windfalls, and every one I lifted had a pale little bruise where the wasps had got in first.

I'll decide about Pryce by Sunday. The snake will probably be gone by then, back under the stones by the wall where it belongs.

Love, Margaret
