The hive behind the chapel wall at Hobb's Lantern had been losing its honey for three summers before anyone thought to ask the bear why. Nell Pardoe found the evidence each morning: a gate hanging open, a comb cracked like a biscuit, and a sticky paw-print on the lid that was far too large for a fox.

She set her trap on a Tuesday. It was a stone jar of clover honey with a thread tied to the cork, and a brass bell hung from the apple tree at the other end of the thread. She sat behind the wall with her knitting and waited, and the bear came at dusk, shuffling down the lane with his round belly swaying and one arm lifted to his mouth, licking his fingers as if he were thinking hard about something sweet.

The bell never rang. He lifted the jar free without a sound, sat down on the upturned crate beside it, and worked the cork loose with the patience of someone who had done it a thousand times. Nell stood up. The bear looked at her over the rim of the jar, a dab of gold on his nose, and did not look the least bit sorry.

'You'll have the lot by Michaelmas at this rate,' she said. He held the jar out to her. She took it, and the bear went back to the hive, lifted the lid and laid three pebbles on the comb inside, one for each summer. The next morning there was a fresh pot of comb on her doorstep, with a single paw-print pressed into the wax.
