Devil cartoon cat tattoo on a limb

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon white cat with a large purple bow and a pink necktie is dressed in a black devil costume with small horns, batwing shapes, a pointed tail and a tail curling up the left side. The bold black outlines and flat fills in light blue, purple, pink and black are set against the skin with the figure centred in the frame. The shading is minimal, with small highlights on the bow and face, giving a clean, graphic look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marion had been standing by the cheese and pineapple for forty minutes before anybody recognised her, which suited her well enough. The hall smelled of floor polish, and the banner over the stage still said Class of '89 in glitter that came off on your sleeve. Someone had printed name badges from the yearbook photographs, and hers showed a girl with a fringe stiff as a breadboard.

Gavin Trout found her at last, holding a paper plate like a shield. "You still have it?" he said. "The cat." She had not thought about the cat in years. It had been the Halloween disco in the fifth year, and she had gone as a white cat with a bow the size of a dinner plate, felt horns stitched to a hairband, a pointed tail wired so it stood up behind her, and a red tie her dad had knotted for a funeral. Gavin had been a fridge that year, a cardboard one with a torch inside, and he had lost the costume prize to her by a single vote from Mr Hibbert, who said the tail was the finest thing he had seen in a school hall.

She told him the outfit was folded in tissue at the bottom of her wardrobe, and the wire in the tail had long since snapped. He said he had always thought she was the devil in it, and she said no, she had only been the cat, and the devil had been stitched on by someone who wanted her to look wicked. He laughed, a bit too loudly, and the room turned round to look.

On the way out she passed the raffle table, where a tea towel covered the prizes. Underneath lay a single bright purple bow that nobody had claimed. She took it without asking and pinned it to her coat, and felt, for the first time all evening, that the night had gone exactly as it should.
