Every spring the honey-coloured bear climbed the hill to the ruined castle, because the old keep had a window with no glass in it and the wind up there smelled of clover. He carried a green balloon on a string, bought from a fair in the valley for one copper and a promise to bring the string back. Nobody remembered who had made the promise. The bear did not mind forgetting.

The castle had belonged to a lord who kept his gold in the walls, so the story went, and when the walls came down the gold stayed where it was. The shepherds' children dug for it in summer and found only snail shells and a brass thimble. The bear did not dig. He sat on the broken sill with his red jumper buttoned to the neck and let the balloon tug gently at his paw.

One afternoon a girl from the mill came up the path, out of breath, asking whether he had seen her goat. He had not. She sat beside him anyway and looked at the balloon. "Where does it want to go?" she asked. He said he had never asked it. So they untied the string together and watched the green thing climb over the walls, past the rooks, over the river, until it was only a bead of light.

The girl went home for supper. The bear waited on the sill until the stars came out, then tucked his paws into his jumper and walked down the hill with nothing in his hands at all, which he said afterwards was the lightest he had felt in a hundred years.
