Rat outline on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single rat is drawn in side profile facing left, with its tail curving down and around to the right. The thin black linework uses short hatching along the fur, small stippled dots on the snout and tail, and an open outline with no solid fill. The design sits centrally on a pale forearm against a plain wall, with the skin tone showing around the edges.

Mrs Hollis had the key to the back door of the village hall and a growing suspicion that the wedding had got away from everyone. The bride's mother wanted the cake moved twice. The florist's van had broken down on the A49, and the caterers from Shrewsbury were already squabbling over the last of the trestle tables.

Nobody saw the rat at first. It came along the skirting board behind the buffet, unhurried, its long tail drawn out behind it in a neat curve as if it were taking a constitutional. It stopped at the foot of the cake stand and looked up at the three tiers the way a magistrate looks at a witness. Then, very deliberately, it turned its back on the lot of them and sat down to wash its face.
Dennis, the best man, spotted it halfway through his speech. He had a sheet of notes in one hand and a glass of warm prosecco in the other, and he said afterwards that the creature had watched him the whole time with a sort of professional interest, as though it were grading him. When the bride's father finally charged across the room with a broom, the rat walked back the way it had come, tail held high, and slipped under the stage without any hurry at all.
Nobody ever found where it went. Mrs Hollis swept under that stage every Sunday for the next ten years, and every Sunday she left the back door open a crack, just in case it had a mind to come to the next one.
