Fine line fox with leafy sprigs and a long flowing tail tattooed on a forearm, in black and grey ink.

Fox and foliage on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fox faces to the side with its head raised, framed by leafy sprigs above and a long, wispy tail that trails down the forearm. The linework is fine, with soft grey shading across the fur and tail. The ink is black and grey, with a small wave pattern visible at the bottom edge of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The fox came back to the back lane on Tuesday, the same red-grey vixen with her brush trailing behind her like smoke off the pit wheel. Mam says she is after the hens, but I think she only wants the scraps from the bins behind Hartley's. I left her a heel of bread on the wall and watched from the scullery window while she sat on the coping and washed her face the way a lady does before chapel. Nobody in Ashgrove would believe me if I said she looked at me properly, so I am telling you instead, since you are the only one who never laughs at my nonsense.

Mr Hartley has took the rosemary down from his yard for the funeral sprays, the whole bush gone, and the lane smells of it now every time the wind comes off the tip. I thought of you on the trawler, and how you wrote that the sea out there smells of nothing at all. I wondered whether you had found anything to smell out there but salt and oil.

The wardens came about the seam again on Monday. Dad says they will not reopen the lower workings until spring, so the men are on the spade at the allotments, which is a sorry thing to see. Still, the fox does not care who is on short time. She just goes where the warm bread is, same as the rest of us.

Write when you can. Send a postcard of any harbour with a wave on it, and I will put it on the mantel beside the other one.

Your loving sister, Nell
