Wolf and roses on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a grey wolf's head with soft shading through the fur and light eyes, set above a cluster of pink and red roses with green leaves. The wolf is rendered in greyscale while the roses are in full colour, so the piece uses both palettes. The forearm rests on weathered wood beside an open vintage book.

Pull that stool closer and mind the sawdust, it gets in everything. You want the old tale or the new one? The new one is only sad. The old one is sad and has a wolf in it, so you'll take the old one. This was Pell's Travelling Menagerie, the last big tent to come over the Pennines, and that summer it had two lions, a camel with opinions, and a grey wolf called Tobias who would not jump through anything.

Tobias came as a cub from a man in Carlisle who swore he was half Alsatian. Half of nothing, Mrs Pell said. She painted the caravan wheels every spring, roses on every spoke, pink and red, so bright the children stood and stared. The wolf sat in the middle of the ring, all silver and smoke, and he only ever performed when she sang. He would lift his head and look at the crowd with eyes like pale coins, and the whole tent would go quiet.
When the money ran out, the lions went to a park in Wales and the camel walked off to a farm. A grey wolf is not a thing you can sell to a man with a garden. So one wet October she opened the back of the trailer, laid a bunch of cut roses on the sawdust, and sat down with her paints. She said nothing. Tobias came out, sniffed the petals, and looked at her the way he used to look at the crowd.
They say he went up the lane towards the hills that night, and by morning the roses had gone too, every one, leaving only the painted wheels. Mrs Pell swore he had carried them off. I think she painted him a path out of the colour and he followed it. If you walk that lane now, you will find petals pressed in the hedgerow, faded to the shade of old paper, as if someone shut them in a book and forgot where.
