Cat silhouette with red vines on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black silhouette of a sitting cat with a white muzzle and face sits above a second black cat shape, which has a curled tail. Red linework of swirling vines, small flowers and stars wraps around the cats and the lower part of the image. The black areas are solid and the red lines are fine and even, set against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tuesday, half past four. Wind backing north-west and the glass in the lamp room is fogged from the inside again, which Mr Abernethy says is the cat's fault for sitting on the vent. The cat in question is Pilot, a tuxedo with a white bib and one ear that folds when he is thinking. He has been on the gallery rail since dawn, watching the boats come round the Skerry.

The second cat came in on Friday's supply boat, wet through and flat as a glove, tucked inside a fish crate. Nobody claimed her. She is black all over except for the curl of her tail, which she keeps wrapped round her feet like a bit of rope, and she will not go near the stove. I have called her Sorrel after the red weed that clings to the landing steps, because that is the colour the beam picks out when it sweeps the rocks at night, a rust-coloured thread running out from the base of the tower.

Pilot has taken to following her up the spiral each evening, stopping at every landing to make sure she is still behind him. Last night I found them both asleep on the chart table, his white bib against her black back, with a scatter of dried sea thrift and a handful of starfish the gulls had left on the sill. Mr Abernethy swept the lot into the bin and swore at the cats. I did not stop him, but I fished two of the starfish out again and set them back on the sill where the light would catch them.

The relief boat is due Thursday. I have written to the office asking for two extra tins of mackerel and a note for the mainland saying the lamp is in good order and the keeper is not lonely. The second part I have not put on the form. It is the first thing I have written in this log that I did not have to.
