Fox and foliage on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fox's head and shoulders are drawn in delicate linework with light shading, framed by leafy sprigs above and beside it. Below the fox, loose flowing strokes trail down the forearm, and a small section of further design is visible at the bottom edge. The ink is grey and blue-grey, set against a cream knit sleeve and a wooden floor in a softly lit, casual photo.

The fox came aboard at Gdańsk with a sack of rye and no ticket, and the mate wanted it over the side before the tide turned. Captain Ysolde Marr said a ship that carried a fox would not founder in the Baltic, and so it stayed, curled in the coil of the bowsprit rope where the spray could not reach it. The men called it Passenger and left it bread crusts at the hatch.

Through that autumn it did small useful things. It found the seam weeping in the forward hold by sniffing along the planks. It carried sprigs of rosemary from the galley pot up the companionway and laid them one by one on the chart table, and old Tobiah swore that rosemary kept a man's sums honest. Nobody thought much of it until the fog came down off the Skagerrak and the lamp in the binnacle guttered to nothing.
In the blind grey the fox walked out along the bowsprit and sat with its tail trailing into the sea. The long hairs drew out and thinned until they were pale threads on the black water, and where the swell lifted them they pointed, always, toward the reef at Hanstholm. Ysolde put the wheel over by their lean and felt the keel clear the rocks by a hand's breadth. Afterwards no one could say whether the fox had saved the ship or only collected its fare.
They made Leith in April. The fox went down the gangplank without looking back, and when the crew cleared the cabin they found the chart table still scattered with rosemary, green and fragrant, though nobody had replaced it since the Baltic.
