Then came the autumn the blue roses began to vanish from the tower beds, one bloom a night, and the steward set four men to watch the flowers. The men watched the roses. They sat among the peach and pink bushes with their lanterns lit and their eyes on the petals, and they saw nothing, because the thief came over the western wall while they were looking the other way.

Oswin did not look at the roses either. He watched the road, the cart ruts, the dust that hung after a horse had passed, and on the ninth night he dropped from the parapet and went after a cart that did not stop at the gate. He came home at dawn with his coat wet and a single blue petal caught in the fur beside his ear. He laid it on the steward's boot, climbed back up the wall, and slept in the sun with his face turned to the west, as though he had never been anywhere at all.
