Vintage botanical bouquet on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bouquet of red and pink flowers, purple and yellow blooms, green leaves and sprigs sits on the inner forearm, close to the wrist. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, with a muted, vintage botanical-illustration feel. The hand rests in the upper left of the frame, with open old book pages blurred in the background.

The album had come up from the cellar of Gull Rock House wrapped in a bath towel, and Mrs Kell wanted it gone before the Whitsun lets. 'Bundle it for the rag man,' she said, pushing it across the scrubbed table with the toe of one slipper. Iris Vane opened it anyway. The pages were foxed the colour of weak tea, and every one held a bouquet painted by someone with more patience than sense: poppies the red of a shop awning, a sprig of something blue, a purple bloom with a dark heart, and a little yellow flower that looked caught leaning toward the light.

Iris had come to Saltcote to be quiet after her mother's funeral, and the house had been generous with quiet. Nobody here asked questions. But the album had a name inside the cover, Margery Kell, 1911, and a list of flowers in pencil down the margin. On the last page someone had written, in a hand that shook, 'Left the poppies out for him. He never came back to see them.'
She found Mrs Kell in the back kitchen, where the kettle was sulking on the range. 'Your Margery?' Iris asked. The landlady's mouth tightened, then loosened. 'My mother-in-law. She painted the whole garden twice over while the men were at sea. Nobody bought the pictures.' She turned to the page with the dark flower and ran a thumb over it. 'That one's a scabious. Grows wild on the cliff path if you know where to look.'
Iris spent the afternoon on the cliff path with a borrowed trowel and a paper bag. When she came back, the poppies had spilled their petals across the hall tiles, and Mrs Kell was on her knees with a dustpan, not scolding, just sweeping them into her palm. 'Put the scabious in the front window,' she said. 'Margery would have wanted the light on it.'
