Wolf head in profile line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A wolf's head seen in side profile, facing left, with pointed ears, a long muzzle and a few short strokes suggesting fur along the neck and cheek. The design is drawn in a single thin dark blue outline with small hatched marks for texture and no shading. The plain white background and open composition leave the outline as the only focus.

Dear Ilse, The wolf came back to the fence line again last night, the grey-blue one I wrote about, standing with its nose pointed toward the drying pans as though it had already decided the salt was worth the trip. Harrow says it is the fourth time this month and wants the perimeter rewired. I told him a wire has never yet stopped anything that wanted to cross it.

The station records list wolves as extinct on Carrow Deep for two hundred and six years. Then the seed vault ledger turned up a line in the old hand: 'Canid lineage, grey, reintroduced for pest control, forty pairs, unlisted.' Somebody in the first survey decided the planet needed teeth before it needed anything else, and nobody wrote down where the teeth were put.
I went out at dusk with the lamp and left the rifle on its hook. It stood on the salt crust with its ears up, watching me the way you watch weather coming in. Its head was turned away, looking off toward the old coast road where the first colony boats used to make landfall. It did not look at me once. I think it was waiting for someone else, and I have been thinking since about who that might be, and whether it has been waiting a long time.
I am not going to log it. Harrow can have his wire. Tell Mam I am eating properly and that the tide clock on the north wall finally runs true. If the wolf comes back before my next letter, I will leave the gate latch up. Love, Maren.
