Black cat and leaves on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A solid black cat head faces right, partly framed by a sprig of leaves and fine whisker lines. The bold black fill is interrupted by a grey-shaded eye and muzzle, and soft red-pink shading sits inside the ears and along one leaf. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bailiff from Thornbury came up the lane with his measuring chain on the third morning of frost, and found the black cat sitting in the hazel hedge as if it had been expecting him. Maud Harrow watched from her gate with a cup going cold in her hands. Nobody in Tallow End had ever seen Sable leave the wood's edge, and nobody had ever seen her go in past the third stile either.

'It's the boundary,' the bailiff said, tapping his chain against the ground. 'Forty yards of undergrowth between the parish and the Crown land. The Lord wants it cleared for the new drove road.' He looked at the cat, which had turned its narrow face to him and blinked slowly, the grey of its eyes gone pale in the cold. Maud said nothing. She had buried two husbands and a brother in that churchyard, and she knew better than to argue with a man who carried a chain.

The bailiff took three steps into the brambles. Then the frost-stiff leaves he had been pulling aside snapped back across his wrist, fine as wire, and a single thorn drew a bead of blood. He swore, sucked his thumb, and walked back down the lane without looking round. By supper the drove road had been moved to the other side of the river, and the story travelled from pub to pub with every detail improved.

Maud carried her cup inside and set it on the sill. Out in the hedge the cat was already gone, but a hazel leaf still rocked on its stalk where she had been sitting, as if someone had only just stepped off into the trees.
