Wolf head with geometric mandala on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head faces forward, its eyes, nose and ears built from stippled dots and fine outlines. A circular mandala of petal-like shapes and a thin geometric frame surround the head, with diamond and arrow-like lines extending downward. The work is in black ink only, with shading created by dense dots and clean single-line linework on pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You take the north lift at ten past two because the south one has stuck again, and by the time the doors open on the fourth floor the corridor lights have dropped to their dim night setting, the colour of weak tea. Ruth at the desk looks up from her crossword and says the wolf came back, though she doesn't say where it went. The porters joke about it over the vending machine. You don't join in. You are the one who checked the drug trolley twice, who knows the alarm on bed nine has a loose wire, and who has stopped expecting anything to be simple after midnight.

Bed nine belongs to a Mr Halloran, who has spent the evening reading the same page of a crime novel and asking the time every twenty minutes. You take his obs, straighten the pillow, and tell him the sun will be up soon, which is a lie but a kind one. He says he dreamt of a grey animal sitting at the foot of the bed, its head lit from behind like a moon caught in a net of thin lines. You tell him dreams are only the brain tidying up. He doesn't believe you, and neither do you, quite.

At quarter to four you find the drawing taped inside the playroom door on the children's ward, which was empty at nine. Someone has inked a wolf with a dotted face, a ring of petal shapes around its ears, and fine arrows running down beneath it like the points of a compass. Nobody on shift admits to it. You peel it off the door, fold it into your pocket, and carry it back to the desk where the lamp is steadiest.

Ruth studies it over her glasses and says the arrows all point the same way, towards the lifts. You know which lift she means. You press the button, the north doors open without a sound, and you step in as the first grey light finds the windows at the end of the corridor.
