Split wolf head tattoo on thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf head fills the upper thigh, with one side rendered realistically and the other filled with geometric lines, petal-like shapes and mandala patterns. The work is built from fine stippled dots and clean black outlines, with soft grey shading around the muzzle and fur. The image is entirely black and grey and is framed closely on the leg, with pink fabric visible at the top edge.

You take the Wadi Fenn road at dusk because the fuel gauge says you can't afford the longer way round, and because your brother told you never to do it at dusk. The tarmac gives out after forty miles and becomes a grey strip of packed gravel that hums under the tyres. Past the dry lake bed a wolf stands on the verge, half of him sharp and ordinary, the other half cut into lace and lozenges, as if someone had started to draw him and then let a patient geometry take over.

He doesn't run. He watches the pickup with one eye that studies you like a customs officer and another that seems to be counting the rivets along the bonnet. You get out. You have a torch, a bottle of water and a tin of peaches, which you hold out like a fool. He takes the tin from your fingers the way a dog takes a glove, carries it around the front of the truck, and sits down in the headlights to open it with his teeth.
The woman at the petrol station in Calder Flats told you the old story: the wolf was a painter once who could never decide whether to paint what he saw or what he wanted to see, so he did both, and the desert kept the difference. You don't believe her. But while he eats you find yourself dragging your boot through the dust, sketching the whole pattern you can see on his shoulder, the petals, the scales, the honeycomb. By the time the tin is empty the wind has taken half of your lines back, and the other half sits in the gravel, waiting for rain.
