Feline head with geometric triangles on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a cat or big cat head in profile, with the muzzle, whiskers dots and ear rendered in fine dotwork stippling that builds soft shading. A small faceted diamond sits on the eye, and several thin-lined overlapping triangles frame the head behind it. The image is a close crop of a forearm against a pale wall and dark background, with the tattoo in black and grey only.

The cat is already sitting on the stile when you come up from the mill with the flour sacks still on your shoulder. It does not look at you so much as through you, the way the old stones in the churchyard at Hollin End seem to look at the lane. One eye is green as bottle glass. The other is a faceted diamond, cold and bright, set into the socket by a man the village buried forty years ago, who owed a debt nobody ever wrote down.

Your grandmother told you the three marker stones at the wood's edge were set by surveyors who wanted the trees to know their place. You didn't believe her until the winter the lower road flooded and the cat began walking the boundary every dusk, pressing its paws along the bracken in a line that closed around the village like a fist. Where its path met the stones, the frost stopped. Where it didn't, the hedges crept.

This evening the cat does not wait for you. It drops from the stile and runs into the bracken, ears flat as a blade, and you follow because your feet have already decided. It leads you to the third stone, which has been dragged a long stride nearer the orchard. Somebody has moved the boundary to take the apple trees for timber money, and the wood has begun to lean in after them.

You kneel in the wet leaves and work the stone back with your bare hands, cursing the cold in words your grandmother would have slapped out of your mouth. When it finally sits true, the cat settles on the flat top of it. The last of the sun slips under the ridge and catches the diamond in its eye, throwing a small sharp triangle across the grass, pointing back towards the village.
