Wolf head with mandala back piece

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head is tattooed centrally across the upper back, facing left, with its muzzle and nose strongly shaded. The left side of the design uses fine, soft shading to render realistic fur and the eye, while the right side is filled with dense, intricate mandala-like ornament. The tattoo is in black and grey against pale skin, with the subject's long hair and a plant visible at the top of the frame.

Sit nearer, the lamp is nearly spent and I want you to hear the wolf before the dark gets to him. Bramwell's Travelling Marvel had only three tents left the winter the river froze, and the finest thing in the menagerie was a grey wolf called Oskar, who had been taken from a forest outside Tallinn as a cub and never once been allowed to forget it. The ringmaster wanted him gentle, so he was given a painter instead of a keeper.

Ada Quill was a thin woman with ink under every nail. She sat on an upturned crate for nine nights and worked her fine needles over the left side of his face, the side that faced the crowd, until it was all lace and rosettes and little spiralling suns. The right side she left alone. Oskar's real eye, the blue one, still watched the treeline beyond the canvas, and she said that was the only part of him she could not improve upon.

When the buyer from Ostend came with his bundle of notes, the wolf was already gone. Only his paw prints led out through the tent flap and across the snow, one set, deep and steady, towards the black line of pines. Ada found the painted half of his muzzle caught on the iron pole where he had brushed past it, a little tuft of grey fur tangled in the ink. The circus packed up that morning and never returned to the town.

Some say he runs the hills still, all lace on one side and forest on the other. I have never seen him myself, but the old men who walk the ridge road swear that the snow does not settle on the patterns, only on the bare side of his face.
