Wolf head with ornamental half on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head faces forward, shown in profile with its ears raised, centred on the upper back of a person whose face is not visible. One side of the wolf is rendered in realistic shaded fur, while the other side dissolves into an intricate ornamental pattern of dots and fine curling lines. The image is in black ink and greys against smooth skin, with a softly blurred indoor background.

Dear Tom,

Old Ansel finished the figurehead for the Marguerite before she went down the slip on Tuesday, and you will not believe what he has done with the wolf. You remember the grey dog wolf that came off the moor the winter Father drowned, the one that took the Hendry lambs and then sat on the harbour wall as if it owned the place. Ansel wanted it kept. He carved it from a single length of ash, head up, ears pricked, and then he could not stop. Half he left as fur, every strand combed the way wet hair lies. The other half he filled with dots, thousands of them, and fine curling lines like the lace Mrs Pengelly makes for the church linen.
The men say the two halves quarrel. Jack Sallis swears the lace side keeps the boat off the Scar and the fur side hauls the nets in. I told him that was nonsense, and he said I should go and stand at the bow after dark and see for myself. So I did, on Thursday, once the lamps were lit. The water was black and the dots caught the lantern, so the carving seemed to breathe, and the grey eye kept turning toward the mouth of the bay as though it could smell something coming back in.
I stood there till my feet went numb. Nothing came but the tide and Sallis's dog barking at gulls. Then I understood why Ansel would not let the wolf be painted. Paint would have made it one thing. As it is, it looks out with the hunger on one side and the patience on the other, and I think that is how a town keeps watch.
So come home by the lace side, Tom. I will leave the lamp lit on the end of the wall, and if the wolf looks your way, you will know the channel is clear.
