Wolf head with ornamental pattern on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head faces forward, with the left side drawn in realistic shading and fur detail and the right side filled with dense ornamental patterns, including swirls, petals and dotted textures. The linework is fine and the shading builds from soft greys to deep black. The tattoo sits on a thigh, with denim shorts visible at the top of the frame against a plain background.

Every morning before the cockerel, Mrs Halka Brenner unbolted the back door of the bakery in Strenmoor and found the wolf waiting on the step with its breath smoking. She never gave it a name. She set a heel of rye on the flagstone and went back to her proving trays, and the wolf ate it without a sound.

Her son Piet thought this a waste of good flour. He wanted the rifle down from the beam, and he said so every morning while he scored the loaves. Mrs Brenner only tapped the flour off her wrists and told him that a wolf which comes to a door is asking for something, and a wolf that is given bread is only hungry.
Then came the hard frost, and the wolf arrived with its right side changed. Where the fur had been, there were whorls and petals cut fine as the lace on the church screen, dots like frost on a window, curled stems running down to its jaw. The left eye was still an ordinary wolf's eye. The right one was a rosette. Piet dropped the peel and stared, and the wolf looked at him with both faces at once.
Mrs Brenner pressed a wet cloth to her forehead and said the old stories had always got this part wrong. A wolf does not go wild in the forest, she said. It goes wild in the pattern books, the ones the lacemakers keep in the hall. Piet laughed, but he did not raise the rifle. He broke a loaf and pressed the crumb into a swirl, and the wolf took it gently, and when the sun came over the ridge it turned into the valley, one half gold and one half lace.
