Woman and black cat in a mirror on forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's profile sits on the forearm with her eyes closed and one hand raised to her face, the long nails dark and detailed. A black cat sits inside a round mirror held up by her hair, with its body filled in using stippled dotwork shading. The linework is fine and clean, with the outlines of the face and hand left mostly open against the pale skin, and the composition runs diagonally along the arm.

Dear Ada,

The snow closed the Shepherd's Rest on Tuesday and it has not opened since, so you will have to take my word for what happened on the stairs. Mrs Leyburn keeps the only other key to the linen room and has been sleeping in her chair by the kitchen range, nails tapping the arm of it, saying very little. Her black cat, the one she calls Mister, has taken to sitting on the landing in front of the round looking-glass with the brass rim that came out of the old Hallam coaching house. He perches on the top of the frame with his tail wrapped over his feet as if he has paid for the seat.
Yesterday I went up with the lamp to fetch sheets and found the glass fogged across its lower half, though nobody had been up there since breakfast. The cat was in it. Not on the landing where he should have been, but inside the silver, working at his paw with his small grey tongue, while the room behind him stood empty. I watched him wash for a full minute. Then my own reflection came up over the edge of the frame beside him, and I took two steps back before I could stop myself.
I have covered the glass with a horse blanket. Mrs Leyburn says that is the sensible thing and that cats have always gone where they please. She also said, without looking up from her knitting, that Mister is only waiting for someone to stop looking at him.
Write soon if the road opens. I will post this with the first cart, if there is one, and I am keeping the lamp lit on the landing all night in case.
Your loving sister, Hannah
