Woman and lotus colour tattoo on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stylised woman's face sits above a pink lotus flower with green leaves at the base of the design. Bold dark outlines frame the figure, and swirling abstract shapes in orange, yellow and pink fill the space above her. Vivid, saturated colour dominates the composition against a pale background with printed price lists.

The dye vats had been steaming since before light, and Nell had the wooden paddle in both hands when the tinker came up the lane asking for the woman who painted the swirls on the oilcloth. Her aunt Ysolde had been dead a month. Nell still answered to the name on the sign, though she had never once managed to make the same blue come out twice.

The tinker had a pack of pressed flowers and a memory of a pattern Ysolde had sold him years back: a lady rising from a pond with a lotus cupped beneath her chin, orange and rose bleeding up behind her like smoke off a cookfire. Nell said the pattern was in the tin trunk under the loom. It was not. She found it at the bottom, folded inside an old bill of sale, and the lady on it had no face at all, only a pale oval where the ink had been rubbed away by a thumb.
Nell carried the sheet down to the pond at the edge of the village, where the alders leaned over the water and the frogs fell silent when she came near. She knelt and waited. Nothing rose. Then the reeds shivered, and a lotus opened in the shallows, pink as the vat she had spent all week stirring, and Nell understood that her aunt had never been painting faces. She had been painting the places where the water kept what it borrowed.
