A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sky came down the valley road the winter the old keep slid into the river, and nobody in Harrow Dale thought to stop it. It was not a large sky, only the size of a cartwheel, black as a well and pricked all over with cold lights, and a comet trailed behind it like a dropped ribbon. Mab Orrin, who kept the goats on the ruined bailey, found it caught in the nettles by the gatehouse and did what a sensible woman does with a thing too big to carry. She sat down beside it.

The villagers brought bread and then their questions. Did it want feeding? Was it sick? The sky said nothing, being mostly stars and dark, but on the third night it began to turn slowly, and the little worlds inside it, pink and orange and blue, knocked against one another like marbles in a pocket. Saturn, with its ring like a lost hoop, rolled up against Mab's boot and stayed there.

Mab understood then that it was lonely. She had been lonely herself since her husband went to sea, so she did the only thing she knew, which was to fold her arms around it and hold on. The sky was cold and the stars pricked at her wrists, but it was heavier than it looked and it did not roll away. She sang the goat songs under her breath until the planets settled.

When the thaw came the whole dale climbed up to the keep to see what was left of the sky. They found only a round black hollow in the grass, dusted with silver, and beside it a woman asleep with her cheek against the earth. Mab woke at dawn with frost on her eyelashes, and she told them the sky had only been going home, and that she had been asked to hold the gate open while it went.
