A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Harrow had flown the Dunmore run for six winters and never once took her goggles off on the ground, because the hangar at Kessock Field had a roof that dripped oil and the men there had a habit of throwing spanners at anything that moved too fast. Tonight she stood under the single bulb with a cigarette cupped in her palm, watching the rain come sideways across the apron.

The mail plane was a tired biplane with a patched wing and a name painted over so many times it read like a rumour. Her mechanic, a stooped Welshman called Pryce, had hung a length of anchor chain across the cockpit door to keep the sacks from shifting, and he swore it was the only thing holding the lot together. "Don't light that near the petrol," he said. She didn't. She turned the cigarette round between her fingers and waited.

At two in the morning the radio crackled with a voice from the coast. A cargo of medicine was sitting at Sallow Point with no way off the sandbar and the tide coming in fast. Nell pulled the fur-lined cap down over her ears, pressed the goggles against her forehead, and climbed into the dark.

She came down at dawn with the crates strapped in and the sea gone grey and flat behind her. Pryce was waiting with a thermos. He looked at the chain, then at the plaster on her cheek, and said nothing about either. She took the thermos, lit the cigarette from the engine's warm glow, and let him believe it was the flight that had made her hands shake.
