Woman portrait with red bandana on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A woman's face and shoulders are shown in a close, front-facing portrait with her dark hair swept back under a red paisley bandana. Bold black outlines and smooth shading give the face, hair and plaid shirt collar depth, while gold chain earrings, a gold chain necklace and small gold stars frame the design. Strong reds, blues, purples and golds dominate the palette against the pale skin of the surrounding limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags has the ladder against the Bramley again, and you can hear the chain on her wrist knocking the trunk every time she reaches. Don't tell her to come down. She's been up there since the dew burned off, and the wasps have already found the windfalls under the row of Discovery trees, fat and drunk on the sugar.

You pick up the basket she has dropped and carry it to the cart at the gate. The red bandana she's knotted over her hair has slipped, and she's pushed it back with the heel of her hand. Stars of late sun come through the gaps in the leaves and catch on the gold links at her throat. Her shirt is the blue checked one her brother left behind when he went to sea, sleeves rolled to the elbow, top button missing.

By four the cart is full and the wasps have given up. Mags comes down the ladder slowly, one rung at a time, then sits on the tailboard and holds out her palm. Inside are three pips, black and slick, from the last apple she ate. "Plant them by the wall," she says. "Let the fox have what it wants. Come back in ten years and tell me the tree was worth the wait."

You say you will. You both know the ten years will not come round for her, and that is the part you carry down the lane while she hums on the cart behind you, bumping over the ruts toward the press.
