Woman portrait with wolf and bird on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo covers the upper arm, centred on a woman's portrait framed by ornate scrollwork and set against pink and red shading. A grey wolf and a bird of prey sit below her, with red roses and foliage filling the lower part of the arm. Smooth shading and bold outlines give the piece a painted look, and the photo is taken at an angle from the side, with a black bra strap visible at the edge.

Mother says the bird knows whose yard is whose. I have stopped arguing with her about birds.

The wolf has been closer than that. Tom Harrow swears it sat at the edge of the bracken by the mill race three nights running, and nobody believes him until the hounds start up at the far end of the lane and go quiet all at once. You will think me mad, but I went down to the beeches on Tuesday with a bowl of scraps, the way Gran used to, and left them under the wild roses at the stile. When I came back the bowl was empty and there was a rose laid across the rim, red as a split lip, with the thorns still on it.

I have not told Father. He would only say I am courting trouble, and perhaps I am. But the forest has never once asked me to choose between it and the village, only to keep my word, and I think I have been keeping it.

Come home at Michaelmas if you can. Bring the good thread and the little scissors. I want to show you how the bracken folds back at dusk, as if someone has just let go of it, and I want you to tell me I am not imagining the eyes.

Your loving sister, Nell
