Woman with roses and an owl design
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A blue pencil sketch of a woman's face with flowing wavy hair, surrounded by full-bloom roses and leaves. A bird with a large round eye sits in the lower right, with its feathers drawn in loose strokes. The linework is fine and shaded with blue tones on a pale background, with faint red guide lines visible at the edges.

Halfway through her third pot of tea, Maud Okafor gave up on the roses and started on the owl. The print shop on Kirkgate had emptied at ten, and the only sounds left were the tick of the cooling press and the traffic hissing past on wet tarmac below. She worked with a non-photo blue pencil, the kind the printers swore by because the camera never saw it. Whatever she drew in that colour would vanish on the plate, which was exactly the point. Nobody could argue with a line they could not see.

The owl came easily. She gave it a round eye and feathers that trailed off into loose, quick strokes, the way the birds lifted off the canal when the lamps came on. Her brother had once told her owls were just rats with better manners, and she had never quite forgiven him for being right about the rats. Outside, a bus shuddered to a stop, and a man in a dark coat stood under the shelter reading something on his phone for a long time without moving.
At half past two she pinned the sheet to the light table to check the proportions and saw the guide lines she had laid down in red at the edges, faint as scratches. Beneath them, where she had thought there was only paper, the owl's eye had come up through the blue, darker than she remembered, looking straight back at her. She had not drawn it that dark. She was almost certain of that.
She did not rub it out. She sharpened the pencil, left the eye as it was, and walked home by the canal path, where the lamps threw the black water back up in pale blue, the colour she had been trying all night to find.
