Woman with pegasus and flowers design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing of a woman with long, flowing hair, dark lips and flowers tucked into her hair, one arm resting across her raised knee. Three winged horses, a pegasus, are placed around her head, shoulder and lower body. The design uses bold black outlines with fine hatching in the hair and wings, and is shown in black ink on white paper with no colour.

Dear Win, you will not believe what the tide left on the back lawn this morning, so I will set it down plainly before Mr Pargeter gets to breakfast and tells it his way. Three horses stood among the washing line poles, wet to the knees, with wings folded like sodden sheets. Their manes were knotted with pink cliff blossom and one had a fistful of wild rose caught in its mane. The lodger in the attic room, Miss Quill, came down in her dressing gown with her ink tin under one arm and simply said, "Oh, you've come out, then," as though she had been expecting them since Easter.

She will not say much, but I gathered that she drew them years ago on the back of a fairground handbill, long before she came to Seaview to be quiet. The pen lines in those drawings were so fine that the wings had to be coaxed out of the paper, she said, the way you draw a cork from a bottle. Every time she looked hard at them, they shifted their weight from one hoof to another, and the smallest one nuzzled her shoulder as if it had only been waiting for the right kind of attention. I gave them a bucket of oats from the stores and they ate it with great dignity.
They were gone by the time the milk came. The only thing left behind was a single flower on the banister, dry and crisp as paper, which Miss Quill has pressed inside her sketchbook. She says she will not draw them again. I have pressed one of the blossoms in your Bible anyway, so you may tell me I am soft in the head when you come up at Whitsun.
