Mind the rope, and mind your purses, because the lad selling toffee apples has been known to have sticky fingers. Now, where was I. Ah yes, the W. Every bill Harrow's Travelling Wonders ever pasted to a barn door began with that great tall letter, the one Ada Pennick painted by hand with a brush worn down to three hairs. She did the whole sign in one go, the way you'd sign your name, and she never once lifted the brush to correct it.

Harrow owed money in every town from Ely to Market Rasen, and when the bailiffs came in the autumn of the great frost, he sold the horses, the calliope and the Wheel of Dreams, but nobody would buy the painted board. So Ada hauled it on her back and walked it out past the last hedge at Thetford, where the field had gone white and the stars hung low enough to touch.
A boy came out of that hedge in the small hours, barefoot and blue at the lips, and asked her what the sign said. He could not read. She told him it said wonderful. He stood there waiting, certain there must be more, so she gave him the only other thing she had, which was the brush, and told him to write whatever came next.
He dipped it in the frost melt and drew the tall W on the boards with one bare hand, leaning hard so the tail tapered off into nothing. Then the rest of the word, letter by letter, slow as a church bell, until the sun came up over the hedge and took the lot. Nobody in Thetford ever read a better bill, and nobody ever found out whose hand it was.
