Inspired script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word inspired written in a flowing black brush script with a thick and thin stroke contrast. Dear Sister Hild,

The abbot has finally let me have the good quill, the goose one with the split nib, and I have spent three days on a single capital. You would laugh. Brother Osric says I am courting ruin by spending vellum on swirls no one will read, but the new psalter asks for initials that look like they are dancing, so dance they shall.
Last night the bell for compline rang while my ink was still wet, and I left the page drying on the sill. When I returned, a candle had guttered and a draught from the cloister door had lifted one corner, and the long tail of the letter I had been drawing had curled up off the vellum like a wave. I stood there with my heart in my throat. Then I saw that the curl had taken a shape I had not planned: a small star where the wind had flicked a spatter of ink, and two dots of gold leaf catching the lamplight.
I sat down and copied the line Brother Anselm read at vigil, the one about the Spirit moving over the waters. The Latin is inspirare, to breathe into, and the English word we use for it, inspired, is far more honest than my clumsy hand. Something beyond my fingers had come in and moved them.
Abbot Gervase came by at dawn, peered at the page, and said nothing for a long time. Then he asked me to leave the wind's curl exactly as it was. So it stays, Hild. Pray for my ink, and for the draughts.
Your brother in ink, Edric
