The postmistress has stopped asking me whether I want the stamp sideways, which I count as progress. I am writing this at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low, because the lens is still cooling in the annexe and I have promised myself I will not go out and look at it again until morning.

You will think me foolish, but Father's last commission was a lens for the Ashby observatory, and when he died with it unfinished I found, pinned inside his ledger, a single sheet on which he had written one word over and over in that long slanting hand he used for Latin and for love letters to Mother. Wonder. Wonder, wonder, down the margin like a row of fence posts. I did not understand it until last Tuesday, when I ground the final curve and held the glass up to the window, and the whole grey marsh came up through it, every reed and heron bent and upside down and suddenly close enough to touch.

I have been practising his hand since. The ink smudges on the downstrokes if I press too hard, and the hairlines vanish if I hurry, so it takes me an hour to write a word the way he wrote it in a breath. I enclose the attempt. Tell me whether it looks like his, or only like a girl who wanted it to.

The observatory man comes on Friday to collect the lens. I have wrapped it in flannel and written the word on the paper beneath, so he will see it when he unfolds it and perhaps stop, as I did, with his hand flat on the table. Come home for Friday if you can. Bring your spectacles. You will want to see the marsh the way I did, sideways and enormous.
