Word AWAY lettering on the sole of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the sole of a foot with the word AWAY drawn in thin black block letters running up the arch, rotated sideways. The lines are clean and even with no shading, and yellowish tones surround some strokes, possibly from a stencil or fresh application. The image is in colour overall, with the skin, toes and a blue-grey background dominating the frame.

The tide had already swallowed the first two sets of prints by the time Marguerite reached the salt marsh, so she knew the trick was working. Ink on the sole does not wash out quickly, and the letters her cousin had drawn were thin and square, the kind a surveyor uses on a map. Behind her the dogs were still barking at the church wall, and the lamps in the village had started to swing.

Piet had been a clerk in the customs house at Ostend before the war, and he had a clerk's dislike of wasted effort. "Nobody reads a footprint for what it says," he had told her, kneeling on the scullery tiles while she sat on the table with her boots in her lap. "They read it for direction. So give them a word that points the way you want them to go." He had spent an hour on her left foot with a brush and a bottle of lamp black, and then made her walk the length of the kitchen to see how the letters landed. A, then W, then A, then Y, each one pressed into the sand with every stride, so that a man following the trail would see the word and nothing else.
She heard the patrol at the dyke before she saw it. Torchlight slid over the reeds, stopped on the mud, and a sergeant's voice called out a word she could not catch. The footprints were leading him north along the bank, away from the sluice gate and the boat waiting there. He would follow them until the light failed, reading the message as it was meant to be read.
She slipped into the reeds barefoot, her soles cold and clean, and let the mud take the last of her steps. Behind her, the dogs began to whine at the trail, sure of what they had found.
