Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single black outline of a city skyline with a tall spire and several towers runs diagonally across the side of an ankle and onto the foot. The linework is thin and unshaded, with no fill. The photo is taken against a beige wall and pale wooden floor, with the leg in soft focus and a dark patterned trouser hem at the top.

The rain had been falling on the fish market since before the bells, and Mabel Orrin still had four crates of eels to sell when the stranger came up the steps with a roll of paper under his arm. He wanted to buy the view, he said. Everyone on the quay had a view of the town, and nobody thought it worth paying for.

Her grandmother had told her the old tale. The town was built by seven masons who each wanted to be remembered higher than the last. Each raised a tower in stone, and each tower leaned a little toward the next, so that from the sea the whole row looked like one long hand reaching for the spire at the far end. When the last mason died, the spire was never finished, and the rain was said to fill the gap.

The stranger unrolled the paper on the wet slab. It was a drawing of the skyline, traced in one black line that never lifted from the page. He asked her to name each tower, and she did: the Chandler, the Salt House, the bell tower with the cracked clock. When she came to the spire he tapped the empty space beside it and said that was where he meant to live.

She told him no one lived in the gap. He only smiled and rolled the paper up again. When she lifted the crate, she found a single coin beneath it, warm from his pocket, and on the wet grain of the slab a thin dark line where the drawing had lain, running from the Chandler to the bell tower and stopping there, as if the hand that drew it had been called away.
