Words fail, music speaks lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a man's inner forearm and wrist showing two lines of black capital lettering in a plain sans-serif typeface. The upper line reads WORDS FAIL and the lower line reads MUSIC SPEAKS, which appears upside down from this angle. The ink is solid black with crisp edges, set against warm skin and a dark background.

Dennis Ashworth had been the quiet one at Hollins Lane, the boy who drew ships on the backs of his exercise books and never once answered when Mrs Pell asked him to read aloud. He came up the side steps with a battered fiddle case and said nothing at all. Someone laughed. He opened the case anyway.

He played it slowly, then faster, and by the second turn the whole room had gone still. Maureen was crying into a paper napkin. Ray had his palm flat on the table, keeping time without knowing it.
When the last note faded, nobody clapped. Then Ray stood, cleared his throat and said, "Well, that's us told." Dennis lifted the bow again, and the room began to sing, badly and then better, without a single word from him, which was exactly how he had always preferred it.
