Small block lettering on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A man's forearm and clenched fist are shown, with the word PARTY tattooed in small, slightly serifed capitals across the inner wrist. The lettering is set in solid black ink with some softer grey edges and reads horizontally along the wrist. A white printed page with a second word in mirrored or rotated type sits along the bottom of the frame, with the wrist and hand filling the upper half.

Dennis had set type at Harrowgate and Dane for thirty-one years, and he knew the composing stick by weight alone. On the Thursday before the Whitsun fair, the foreman dropped a proof on his bench with a red ring round one line of the handbill. 'Reverse it,' the foreman said, 'the block's going to the press as printed.' Dennis looked at the word, which was meant to say PARTY, and saw that someone had already locked the forme backwards, each letter standing on its face like soldiers who had fallen the wrong way.

He could have sent it back. Instead he pulled the tray of sorts and began picking the letters out one by one, Y, then T, then R, then A, feeling the nicks in the lead under his thumb. His daughter Mo had been on about a party for weeks, a proper one in the back room of the Crown with a bad band and a lad from the docks on the decks, and Dennis had said no twice. The handbill was the only way she would ever know he had agreed to anything.
By closing time the forme read the right way round, but he had dropped one letter upside down, the second R, so the poster said PARTY with a small stumble in the middle that nobody at the fair noticed except Mo. She stood in front of the wall, tilted her head, and laughed until she had to hold the lamp post. 'You did that on purpose,' she said. He had not. He told her so, and she didn't believe him, which was the nearest thing to a party either of them had managed in years.
