World map and adventure lettering on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm showing a fine line outline of a world map, with the continents of Africa, Europe and Asia most visible. Below the map, the word ADVENTURE is written in a plain serif typeface with an arrow pointing right, and the first letters are partly cut off by the frame. The ink is black with soft grey tones, and the background is green foliage in natural light.

Mags had the chart spread across the wheelhouse table, pinned at the corners with a tin of sugar, a torch and two mugs gone cold. The Maren Rose was meant to be clear of Peterhead before the tide turned, and Dougie still hadn't signed the fuel slip. She ran her thumb down the Norwegian coast, then out across the blank paper where the old surveyors had simply stopped drawing, and found the faint pencil word someone had written there decades ago, ADVENTURE, with an arrow that ran off the edge of the sheet.

"Nothing past the Faroes but weather and Spanish trawlers," Dougie said, shouldering into his oilskins. "The cod are where they've always been."

"Cod that have been fished for forty years don't stay put," Mags said. She had the auction prices from Hull, dropping week on week, and the young deckhand Ewan had been reading the sounder printouts like love letters. "We go south-west, past the bank, and find the grounds nobody's worked since the war."

Dougie looked at the chart for a long time. Outside, the gulls were quarrelling over a bait box and the harbour lights were going out one by one as the town woke for work that wasn't theirs.

They cast off at half six with the wind on the quarter and the sun a thin wire on the water. By noon the coast had gone to a grey line behind them, and by evening Ewan was singing badly on the foredeck, pointing at things nobody else could see. Mags took the chart down before she slept and folded it into her locker, the pencilled arrow still pointing east, toward the open edge of the sea.
