World map outline on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo of the world's continents covers the inner wrist, with the landmasses drawn as a single thin, unshaded line. The linework is fine and even, and the map sits across the wrist crease, curving with the joint. The photograph is taken from above on a grey, speckled ground, with a woman's hand holding a dark object and a green knitted sleeve at the lower edge.

The function room at the Crown smelled of carpet shampoo and lukewarm gravy, and Dev had already been asked three times whether he was still living in Stockport. He said yes each time. It was easier than explaining the white van parked outside, or the atlas on the passenger seat with its spine held together by parcel tape.

Sarah Whitlow found him by the raffle table. She had cut her hair short since Year Nine, but she still stood the way she used to at the back of Mr Adeyemi's geography room, one hip against the radiator, ready to argue. 'You never collected your Atlas Quiz trophy,' she said. 'Mrs Lowther kept it in the cupboard with the dead maracas.'
He laughed, and then he was reaching for a paper napkin, because that was what they had always done when a lesson ran out of time: draw the world on whatever was to hand. He uncapped a biro. She took it from him without asking and drew Africa first, fast, the western bulge going in one confident sweep, and he crowded Europe in above it with the Mediterranean pinched shut like a bad zip. Her hand was steadier than his. It always had been.
When the napkin was full, she folded it down the middle the way they used to fold notes under the desk, and the Americas met Asia along the crease. 'Still wrong,' she said. 'Greenland's far too big.' 'It's always too big,' Dev said, and for once neither of them argued about it.
