Fine black outline world map and the word Adventure with an arrow tattooed on the inside of a wrist.

World map outline and Adventure arrow on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin, single-line outline of a world map covers the inner wrist, showing Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia with the Americas fading toward the left edge. Below it, the word ADVENTURE is set in a typewriter-style serif capital font, ending in a small arrow pointing right. The tattoo is black ink on light skin against a blurred green foliage background in warm natural light.

The clock above the ticket hall at Crewe said twelve minutes past six when Imelda Vance slid a sheet of squared paper across the counter. Dev had worked the late window for eleven years and had been asked for everything from lost umbrellas to one-way tickets to places that did not exist, but never for a coastline drawn in a single unbroken line. She had got Africa wrong twice, she admitted, and given up on the Americas altogether.

Where are you headed, then? Dev asked, reaching for the fare book. Nowhere yet, she said. Her father used to trace the map on the tablecloth with a teaspoon handle every Sunday and tell them which bits he would walk to. He never got further than Blackpool. She tapped the bottom of the paper, where she had typed a single word on an old machine and pressed so hard the letters had bitten through. The arrow at the end ran off the edge of the page.

Dev ran his finger down the timetable. There was a Harwich connection at 6.40, a change at Ipswich, and the night ferry sailed at eleven. He counted the pounds twice and found the sum came to a single, which he had never sold to anyone without a return folded in their pocket. He printed it, stamped it, and slid it across with the change.

Imelda put the ticket inside her coat and walked out towards platform four without checking the board. Dev watched the indicator flip from Crewe to Harwich Town, and noticed that for once nobody was queuing behind her to ask him anything at all.
