World map outline across a back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo of a world map in thin black outline covers most of the upper back, with North and South America on the left, Europe, Africa and Asia across the centre and right, and Australia at the lower right. The linework shows country borders as single fine lines with no shading or fill, and the skin is a warm, even tone. The subject is photographed from behind with arms raised and the head turned away, so the composition centres on the map.

Dear Tom, The Winter Assembly Rooms smell of wet coats and Brylcreem, and tonight Mr Pell pinned his big map of the world above the stage so we could see where the foxtrot came from. He drew the borders himself in Indian ink, every country a single hair line with no colour, because he said colour makes a place look like it belongs to somebody.

Between sets I stood under it with my lemonade and found Lincolnshire, which is smaller than my thumbnail, and then Bombay, which Dad never called anything but Bombay. Mr Pell came and stood beside me and said the borders were the only honest thing on the page, because the sea is always moving and the names keep changing, but a line you draw once stays where you put it. I asked him what happens to a line when a country goes. He said you rule a new one, and nobody notices but the people who lived inside the old one.
Then the band struck up and Sid Harker from the Mercantile asked me to dance, and I said yes before I had thought about it. We went round beneath Africa and past Australia down by the fire door, and he counted the steps out loud like a man reading coordinates. I thought of you on the Ardent, somewhere well below the equator, and wished you were the one counting.
When the hall emptied I climbed onto the stage and put my fingertip on Australia, which was the only bit I could reach without a chair. The ink was dry and didn't smudge. I'm sending this with the programme so you know the map is still up. Write soon, and tell me which side of the line you're sleeping on. Your loving sister, Ada.
