Outline world map on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a fine line outline of the world map, showing the continents and some islands, inked on the inside of a wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the map sits horizontally across the wrist with the Americas on the left and Australia on the right. Two silver chain bracelets are worn just below the tattoo on the forearm, and the background is dark and softly out of focus.

The ink in Marta's pen was thinner than the chart-makers used, and her father said that was why it would never last. He kept the maps on the wall of the Brass Anchor on Quay Street, where the lamps burned until dawn and sailors came in from the dark to drink beneath the coastlines. Marta drew at the back table after the shutters went up, when the room smelled of wet wool and tallow and nobody asked what she was making.

She drew the world in single lines with no shading, because her grandmother had told her that shade made land look as though it was sinking. The Americas went on the left, Africa in the middle, and Australia on the far side where the lamplight gave out. Islands she pressed in as small dots, dozens of them, the way you might scatter salt. One night a sailor called Oswin Kettle sat down across from her and asked whether she could make the continents bigger, so a man could find his way home by them.
Marta said she could not make land bigger, only truer. Oswin laughed and said his ship had gone down off the Horn with his brother aboard, and that he had dreamt of a small island north of the sea he could not name. She drew it that night, a fleck of ink where the water should be, and his finger found it before the ink was dry. He left at first light with the paper folded inside his coat.
When Marta came down the next evening, the wall held the same maps, but the dot she had made had been scraped from the paper and the sea around it was rubbed raw. Her father shrugged and said nobody had come in since dawn. Beside the bar a cup of tea sat cooling, and on the chart beside it a single fine line ran out from the shore toward a place no one had charted yet.
