World map outline tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long dark hair faces a wall covered in a cream floral wallpaper, with her bare back to the camera. A black outline tattoo of the world map spans the upper back, showing continents such as the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. The thin, single-weight linework is unshaded and sits against the warm skin tone, with the composition centred on the tattoo.

The coastline was the easy part. Ruth had traced it a hundred times on the back of the shop's paper placemats, and the ink never once wandered off into the Atlantic where it had no business being. What took the time was Africa, which kept wanting to be bigger than it looked on the printed chart, and Dev swore at it under his breath until she laughed and told him to stop being a pirate about it.

She had brought the old atlas from her mother's house in Penzance, the one with the cracked spine and the ferry timetable pressed between the pages of the Pacific. Her mother had marked every place she meant to go with a tiny pencil cross, and most of the crosses were still there, unvisited, a little faded. Ruth had never asked why she stopped at the cross and never went on. Now the map was going somewhere else entirely, somewhere she could carry without a suitcase.

When Dev wiped the last of the blood and the cling film came off, she turned to the mirror propped on the wardrobe and could not see her own back, only the reflection of the wallpaper, those thin climbing stems with their small black flowers. It occurred to her that the map and the pattern were both drawn by people who had never stood where they were drawing. She picked up the pencil from her mother's atlas, ticked the Australian coast in her own hand, and sent Dev a photo before she could change her mind.
