World map outline on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline of the world map covers the inner upper arm, showing the continents of the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia with a few small islands. The linework is a single even black line with the land masses left unshaded, so the skin shows through inside the outlines. The arm fills most of the frame against a pale stone wall, with a patterned fabric edge visible at the left.

The atlas came into the shop at ten past eleven, wrapped in a bath towel and carried through the rain by a man who wouldn't give his name. Dev unwrapped it under the lamp. The pages had gone soft as cloth, and on the one with the world on it, the ink had lifted from the coastlines in a fine grey dust, so the continents looked like they were drifting off the paper.

I'd been restoring maps for the Ferensby Street shop for six winters, and I knew the trick was never to trace over the lines you could still see. You worked from the gaps. You found where the sea used to be and drew the land back into it, one stroke at a time, with a pen that wouldn't bleed. Dev wanted it finished by morning. The man had a flight, he said, and kept checking his watch as if the coast of Brazil might leave without him.

By two I had the Americas holding together and Africa almost whole. The man came back at four, soaked again, and stood where the lamplight stopped. He asked whether the islands were there. I said I'd found eleven. He said his mother had counted forty-one from the top of a hill outside Lagos, and I should put in whatever she'd seen. So I went back to the paper and drew the small ones in, the scattered specks off the edge of Asia, until the whole thing looked less like a map and more like a list of places somebody had been.

He paid in cash and folded the atlas back into the towel, tucking the corners in like a child's blanket. At the door he touched the dry page with one finger and said the lines were the only part of the world that had ever been his to keep. Then he was out in the rain, and I was left with the lamp, a pen, and the strange certainty that I had just finished a map of somewhere I had never been.
