World map and wanderlust script on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A fine black outline of the world map sits on the upper back, with the word wanderlust in thin script beneath the lower left continents. The linework is clean and unshaded, and the ink appears dark against the skin. The woman's head and face are out of frame, with a flower crown at the top and lace at the right shoulder, and the soft warm background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The order came in on a Tuesday, scrawled on the back of a shipping slip: one world map, outline only, drawn in a single unbroken line. Aldous Finch read it twice at his drawing board in Leith, then pinned fresh vellum flat and uncapped the Indian ink. The client wanted no lifted pen, no joins, no little islands dotted in afterwards. Just one continuous stroke from start to finish, as if the world had been walked rather than measured.

He began at the bottom of South America because the old atlases had taught him that was where distances started to matter. The line climbed through Africa, slipped across the Indian Ocean in a long dry sweep, and folded itself round Australia like a sleeping cat. His daughter Ruth came in with two mugs of tea and stood behind his stool, watching his wrist. 'You'll never lift it,' she said. 'Not once?' 'Not once,' he said, and the nib caught on a fibre and spattered a blot over Greenland that he had to scrape away with a razor.
By three in the morning the ink had thinned to grey, and he had to draw the last stretch of Asia with his breath held. Near the coast of Japan he wrote the word wanderlust in the margin in his smallest hand, because the client had asked for it, and then he went back to the line. It ended where it had begun, on the north-west corner of Scotland, a hair's breadth from the rim of the sheet.
He rolled the map into a cardboard tube and wrote the address in capitals. Only when he had sealed it did he notice the scratch on his palm where the nib had jumped, and that his tea had gone cold beside a window full of Leith rain. He had drawn the whole world without once leaving his stool.
