World map outline on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the outer thigh and hip of a person, with hands resting at the top of the frame and shorts partly visible. A thin black outline of the world map covers the thigh, showing the continents including Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. The tattoo is a single-line outline with no shading or fill, and the photo is in sepia tones with a softly lit interior behind.

The departures board at Carlisle flicks over for the third time, and the Glasgow train is still listed with a question mark beside it. You have a single ticket in your coat pocket and a coin you keep turning with your thumb, heads for staying, tails for the sea. Your uncle always said the world was smaller than the people who drew it, and you never knew whether he meant that kindly.

A porter with a grey moustache pushes a trolley of parcels past you and stops in front of the old waiting room. Someone pinned an outline map to the wall there in 1952 and nobody has repainted it since. The continents have faded to the colour of weak tea, but the ink lines are still sharp where somebody traced them, Africa a lean shoulder, the Americas hanging off the edge like washing on a line.
'Going far?' he asks. You tell him you don't know yet, which is the truest thing you've said all week. He nods as though that is the correct answer for a station like this one, then taps the glass over the place where the Atlantic runs out of paper. 'Your uncle drew that for us, you know. Said every line on it was a place somebody had been brave enough to walk to.'
The 14:20 pulls in with a long sigh of brakes. You look at the coin once more, then drop it into the bin beside the ticket barrier. You walk onto the platform with the atlas under your arm and let the doors close behind you, the carriage already pulling away toward the edge of the paper.
