Worn plush rabbit on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A worn, stitched plush rabbit sits among grass and tufts across the forearm, with one button eye and a bent ear visible. The linework is dark and fairly fine, with soft grey shading giving the fabric a battered, textured look. Ochre and orange tones dominate the toy, with grey and black used for shadows and the grass.

The lamps on Ferrier Gardens come on at twenty to nine, one by one, and by the time I make my last round the grass along the railings has gone the colour of stewed tea. That was where I found him, wedged between a bin and the iron, one ear bent flat as if someone had sat on it and then felt sorry.

He had been a rabbit once. Ochre gone grey at the paws where a hundred small hands had held him, a seam pulled loose along one arm so the stuffing showed like a cough of cotton, and only one button eye left to look at me with. The lost property tin was full, and Gary from the council would have chucked him in the skip without a second glance, so I put him in my coat pocket and told myself I'd sort it in the morning.
I went back the next evening with him under my arm and sat on the bench by the sycamore. At half past seven a woman came through the gate calling a name, Pip, Pip, and her voice snagged on the second syllable every time. Her torch wobbled across the path. She checked under the benches, peered into the hedge, then stood still with the light pointing at nothing. I didn't say a word. I just watched her walk back out with empty hands.
When she'd gone I pushed him down into the long grass at the foot of the tree, so only that bent ear showed above the blades. I walked the far side of the park to give it time. When I came back at dusk he was sitting up, facing the gate, the way a thing sits when it expects someone to come through it.
