Fingerprint heart tattoo on the lower stomach
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is filled with concentric fingerprint-like swirl lines in black ink, sitting on the lower abdomen. The linework is fine and even, with the swirls shaded lightly to give a soft, textured look. A manicured hand with pale pink nails and black lace underwear frame the tattoo against the skin.

Nobody in Halifax ever asked my father why he kept the spare ink pad in the drawer under the brass scales. The spring Ada Barraclough came in, she wanted her thumb rolled for the Co-operative's new savings book. My father set the card in front of her and she pressed too hard, then laughed at herself and pressed again. The swirl came out crooked at one edge, the ridges bending back round on themselves into a little heart. My father looked at it for a long while and said a machine would never have made such a mistake.
She came back every March after that, always with a reason to be in the office, always asking for her thumb to be rolled again. He filed each card in the drawer under the scales, and each heart was a little different, the lines drifting like a tide that would not settle. When he died I found forty-one of them, tied with string, and nothing written on the top card but her name.
