Dear Ines, the swallows came back to the rail yard this morning, the same forked tails you used to draw on my schoolbooks, and I stood there with my bag at my feet like a fool waiting for a train that wasn't coming. The customs officer at Calais had taken my passport and looked at it for a long time, then at the little yellow feather I'd stuck inside the cover because you said it would bring me luck. He asked what I was carrying. I said birds, mostly, and he laughed and waved me through to the next booth without a word.

The crossing itself was nothing. Grey water, a ferry full of lorry drivers eating crisps, a child who kept tracing the moons on the window with one finger. I kept thinking of the sheet you gave me the night before I left, the one with the peacock eye in the middle and the arrows running down the side like a map. You said anyone could be a wanderer if they had the right instructions. I told you wanderers didn't need instructions. You rolled your eyes and pressed the sheet into my hand anyway.

I have a room now above a bakery on a street whose name I still can't pronounce. The landlady says the swallows nest under her eaves every spring and she never once has shooed them off. I've decided that means something. Tomorrow I will find work, and I will buy a proper notebook, and I will write you a longer letter with fewer birds in it.

But tonight the window is open and the swallows are cutting figures across the sky, black against a bruised orange sunset, and I have pinned your gift to the wall where I can see it. I hope you're keeping the arrows pointed the right way.
