Three sunflowers stacked on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three sunflowers with yellow-orange petals and dark brown centres are stacked vertically down the forearm, with teal-green leaves along the left and lower edges. Bold black outlines define the petals and seed heads, and the flowers are filled with flat colour and light shading. The design fills the forearm from the elbow towards the wrist against a plain skin background.

Mrs Ashdown has put you in the room at the top of the stairs, the one with a water stain shaped like Ireland, and by the second morning you have learned that the sea at Corrigan Bay wakes before the gulls do. You take your tea to the window and watch the boats nose out past the breakwater while the wallpaper curls in slow strips behind the wardrobe.

The sunflowers are the first thing you notice. Someone has planted a row of them along the back wall of the yard, three tall stalks that have outgrown the fence and lean over the bins as if hoping for a better view of the harbour. Their heads are wide and heavy, dark at the centre, and each morning they have turned a little further east, following a sun you cannot yet see over the cliffs. Mrs Ashdown says the seeds came in a packet her late husband bought at a fair in 1979 and never got round to sowing.
On the last afternoon of the season you find her kneeling in the dirt with a trowel, cutting the heads for seed. She does not look up. "Take one," she says, "before the gulls do." You press its rough face into your coat pocket, where it will leave a yellow smudge on the lining. Walking to the station, you think of those stalks standing in the yard all summer, too tall for their fence and never once looking back at the house, and you keep your hand on the pocket the whole way up the hill.
