Yin and yang cats in galaxy colours
Back · Colour · Photo
A circular design shows two cats arranged in a yin and yang pose, one dark navy and one pale pink with white whiskers. The background is a galaxy of blue, purple and pink with small stars, sparkles and snowflake-like motifs. Colour ink dominates across the piece, with soft shading on the cats and a clean outline around the circle.

The ferry to Skerra had stopped running in March, so the two sisters rowed the last mile themselves, one pulling oars while the other held the lantern steady over the black water. Nobody on the mainland wanted to cross to the island that winter. The lighthouse keeper had gone to his daughter's in Thurso and left the door unlatched, and a note on the table said only that the cats were fed and the sky was not to be trusted after midnight.

The cats were waiting on the rocks when they landed, one dark as a bottle of ink, one pale as milk with the moon fallen into it. They did not run. The dark one stepped forward and looked at the lantern, then at the elder sister, then sat down with its tail curled round its feet as if it had been expecting a bill. The pale one walked the circle of wet stones twice, nose low, and came to rest against the dark one's flank so that the two of them made a single round shape, like a coin turned face to face with itself.
The sisters carried the lantern up the path and the cats went ahead, and where their paws touched the frost little white stars sprang up and stayed there. By morning the whole island glittered as though someone had spilled a jar of salt across the heather. The keeper came back in spring to find the lamp still lit and the cats asleep in the lens housing, and he never again asked where the sisters had gone, or why the light had been burning on a night when no boat could have come in.
