Yoga pose on a beach with an upper arm tattoo
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A woman in teal leggings and a white sports bra balances upside down on a sandy beach, with her legs raised straight up and her head lowered. A small dark tattoo of script or lettering is visible on her upper arm, partly hidden by the pose, with no clear linework or shading detail. The image is in full colour, with the sand, sky and sea forming a light, open background.

He wrote about the pier lights coming on early over the bay, a tide table pinned to the bakery door, and a grey seal that followed the ferry out past the breakwater every morning as if it had paid for a seat. He had rented two rooms above a chip shop where the sea crept under the door at spring tides. At the bottom, almost as an afterthought, he asked her to bring the blue enamel kettle, the one with the chipped spout, because the landlady's was made of something that tasted of coins.
She drove down on a Saturday with sand already in the car mats from the last trip. He was on the sea wall at low water, crouched on the flat ribbed sand below it, writing with a stick. The letters were big and careless, and the sea came sliding up the beach to take each word back a little at a time. She read them as they went: KETTLE, then COME, then her name, then COME again, lower down, where the water hadn't reached yet.
She took the stick from him without a word and wrote YES under his last line, pressing hard so the letters would hold their edges. Then they stood side by side and watched the tide read both of them, letter by letter, before it smoothed the beach flat and carried everything out to sea.
